Position and movement

One of the most important data set of the OBU is the monitored vehicle's position and movement parameters. To perfectly reconstruct every detail of these parameters the IRIS.base is equipped with a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) chip, as well as a triple axis accelerometer and a gyroscope. The GNSS chip supports the sattelites of the American GPS, the Russian GLONASS and the Japanese QZSS navigation systems and the GPS precision enhancing augmentation systems (WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS, GAGAN). The accelerometer is a 10-bit resolution 3D sensor which is able to detect even a 0,015g acceleration (g = 9.81 m/s2) in every direction. The gyroscope is an ultra-sensitive 3-axis angular velocity meter.

Connection to the vehicle

Besides the integrated sensors the OBU is also connected to the vehicle through the system connector's inputs and outputs.

Mobile connection

The unit is capable of connecting to any service-provider with the use of a 4 band, GPRS capable mobile chip, which can maintain a continuous TCP connection with a remote server. The communication and the data-transmission is based on a highly effective, universal, compact binary form, the OSP v1.1, developed by Optin Ltd. Even in the case of a network error data loss simply can not occur due to the device’s ability to store locally everything, that has not been sent. This internal memory can also be expanded by a MicroSD card.

Bluetooth

The IRIS.base+BT is an upgraded version of the IRIS.base. It is equipped with a Bluetooth v2.0 module, and can connect to other equipments, mobile applications via Bluetooth.

Reliability and protection

The IRIS.base contains several protection circuits and has its own battery to prevent and warn about any possible sabotage. The in- and outputs are all protected against overvoltage and electric sparks. The antenna plugs are also different types, preventing them from being interchanged. The charging of the inner lithium polymer battery is controlled by the charger IC, therefore even if the OBU is separated from the electrical network it can operate and send data for several days afterwards.

Additional increase in the reliability of the device is obtained by the system’s ability to remotely update the device’s firmware. In the OBU there is also a built-in remote console technology, which lets the owner set all the parameters dynamically at any time.

Size and boxing

The device is packed in a custom-made plastic box. Its design prevents the lid from being opened if the box is already installed. The IRIS.base is also by far the smallest device of its kind in the market!
